Following worrying reports of a rise in Race based Hate Crime in the Northumbria Police area we have obtained the data for North Tyneside. Thankfully following an alarming rise in offences Summer 2024, levels have come back down. Every one of these offences will have been distressing for our residents who are the victims of this hate. We need to be working night and day to bring people together and protect our neighbours from this happening again.
Hate Crime (Race) Reports 2022-2025 (North Tyneside)

Despite at times inflammatory rhetoric around migration making its way into North Tyneside’s Mayoral Election this year, it’s relieving to see that this didn’t result in a rise in crime numbers. However we continue to urge politicians of all parties to think long and hard about the language they use and the impact this can have on our residents.
Last summers “Farage Riots” revealed fractured communities across the UK where deepening deprivation has driven social unrest. Clearly these protests attracted many people who are habitually violent even within their own household, with nearly half of those arrested in Sunderland having being previously been the subject of a domestic abuse report.
National events and the way they are displayed in the media have a direct impact on us in North Tyneside. Misinformation is rife online. Locally we need to look out for our neighbours and come together.
There’s many positive things happening in the North East including Show Racism The Red Card’s work with both Sunderland United and Newcastle United. Our local initiative North Tyneside Together continues to work hard for community cohesion.
Northumbria Police are happy to be reporting falling levels of hate crime in 2025 but are not complacent. Officers said:
“When we consider hate crime (all categories) in North Tyneside comparing the previous 12 months it can be seen that reductions in reports have been recorded across all areas of North Tyneside. Northumbria Police are not complacent with the reduction in reports as it is recognised that there may be many reasons why reports have reduced, for example a genuine reduction in hate crimes, or a lack of confidence in reporting leading to fewer reports or effective means for those affected to report hate crimes.
| Location | 12 Months % Change |
| North Shields | -5% |
| Whitley Bay | -7% |
| Wallsend | -15% |
| Killingworth | -26% |
Positive Outcomes resulting from hate crime investigations in North Tyneside have shown an increase from 11.2% to 18.4% when comparing this current period with the previous period (Current: 23/10/24-22/10/25, compared to 23/10/23 – 22/10/24).”
If you experience or witness people being harassed or targeted because of race, disability, religion, sexual orientation, or identity, please report it. We’re grateful to Susan Dungworth Northumbria PCC for her continued work on this issue, and to local police teams for their work and for providing the data above.
